Texas Women's Basketball advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 82-42 win over No.16 Drexel. The Lady Longhorns will face the winner of No.8 Alabama vs No.9 Florida St. on March 24.

This first round matchup marked the first-ever meeting between Drexel and Texas in either programs' history. Texas Women's Basketball will look to take this momentum past the second round,  which is where the Longhorns run ended in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

Here's an inside look at the Longhorn's win over Drexel in the first round.

Drexel vs. Texas WBB Recap

The Lady Longhorns took control of this game early vs. Drexel and never looked back with a final score of 82-42. Drexel started the game strong and were pacing with Texas in the first quarter only being outscored 19-12.

For the Dragons Amaris Baker got the offense started scoring consecutive layups in response to the Longhorns 9-0 run following tip-off. Baker would hold the game high for Drexel finishing with 10 points on 5-13 FG shooting.

The game plan for Texas was clear throughout this game with an emphasis to work the ball inside and use the their height and size advantage over Drexel. Texas outscored Drexel 44-18 on points in the paint alone. Leading the charge inside for UT was the trio of Taylor Jones,  Aaliyah Moore and DeYona Gaston.

All three of these players range from 6-foot-1 to 6-foot-4 while Drexel only has two players above 6-foot on their roster.

At halftime, Texas lead the way 40-20 and would expand the point difference throughout the second half. Shaylee Gonzalez went 3/3 from 3-point FG in the third quarter, she went on to finish the game shooting 5-6 and making UT's only 3-pointers of the game.

Both teams struggled from beyond the arc with Texas shooting 5-10 from 3-point FG compared to Drexel's 3-14 shooting.

From the middle of the third quarter to the final buzzer the size and athleticism was clearly beginning to wear down Drexel. This was most apparent in the rebounding category where Texas led 51-23, almost half of those being offensive rebounds for Texas, leading to 22 second chance points.
