Washington Announced As Semifinalist For 2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major POY

Drexel women’s basketball standout Keishana Washington was announced as a semifinalist for the 2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award by Her Hoop Stats on Wednesday morning.

Washington is one of 10 semifinalists, joined by Sam Breen (UMass), Yvonne Ejim (Gonzaga), Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu (South Florida), Alex Fowler (Portland), McKenna Hofschild (Colorado State), Abbey Hsu (Columbia), Kiki Jefferson (James Madison), Myah Selland (South Dakota State) and Desi-Rae Young (UNLV).

This year’s list of semifinalists includes representatives from 10 schools and eight conferences.

It marks the second straight season the CAA has had a student-athlete as a semifinalist.

Florida Gulf Coast University’s Kierstan Bell won the award in 2022 and 2021, after Ciara Duffy of South Dakota was the inaugural winner during the 2020 season.

Washington ranks third in the NCAA in points per game and total points. The graduate guard averages 27 points per contest and has scored 593 points this season.

She has reached double figures in 56 consecutive games, scoring at least 15 points in every game this season.

Additionally, Washington has tallied 20 or more 17 times, at least 30 points on eight occasions and a pair of 40-point efforts.

The Pickering, Ontario, Canada, native is one of three players in the NCAA with multiple 40-point performances this season.

In addition to being a semifinalist for the 2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year award, Washington was named a top-10 candidate for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and WBCA, along with being selected to the midseason watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Year by the USBWA.

Award Eligibility & Schedule

To be eligible for this award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major."

The following conferences are considered high-major for the purposes of this award, and thus ineligible: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC.

In October, the 25-player preseason watch list was announced.

Following this week's announcement of the 10 semifinalists, will be the naming of the five finalists in early March. The winner will be announced in late March.

The list is fluid, and players may play their way on, or off, the list over the course of the season.
